Jamie Gorelick - In Depth

Born on May 6, 1950, Jamie Gorelick is an American lawyer and presently a partner in the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr LLP, generally known as WilmerHale. Jamie Gorelick has established herself in the political and legal arenas. Jamie Gorelick served as the U.S. Deputy Attorney General from 1994 to 1997.

Jamie Gorelick has been hailed as one of the "500 Leading Lawyers in America" in 2007 by Lawdragon Magazine; included in Washingtonian Magazine’s "Power 150" in 2007; one of the "Greatest Washington Lawyers in the Past 30 Years" by the Legal Times; and recognized as a leader in Government: Government Relations by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, 2007 and 2008 editions, to name some. Jamie Gorelick has also received numerous honors and awards, including the Director of Central Intelligence Award in 1997; Department of Justice Edmund J. Randolph Award in 1997; Equal Justice Works Outstanding Advocate of the Year in 1997; Secretary of Defense Distinguished Service Award in 1994; Secretary of Energy Outstanding Service Award in 1980; Corporate Leadership Award by the DC Chamber of Commerce in 2003; and Bar Association of the District of Columbia Lawyer of the Year in 2004.

Prior to joining WilmerHale in 2003, Jamie Gorelick served as Vice Chairman of the Federal National Mortgage Association, known as Fannie Mae, from 1997 to 2003. Before joining Fannie Mae, Jamie Gorelick served as the U.S. Deputy Attorney General from 1994 to 1997 under the administration of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, wherein she served in the law enforcement and litigation divisions of the Department. Jamie Gorelick became the General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Defense in 1993 where she served for a year. Prior to joining the Defense department, Jamie Gorelick worked in the private sector, being part of the litigation team of the law firm Miller, Cassidy, Larroca and Lewin from 1975 to 1993, excluding 1979 to 1980, when she served as assistant to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy and counselor to the Department’s Deputy Secretary.

Jamie Gorelick has served on several commissions and boards such as the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States; CIA’s National Security Advisory Panel; The Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Embassy of the Future Commission; the President’s Intelligence Review Panel; the Supreme Court Judicial Fellowship Commission; the Department of Energy Commission on Science and Security; the Advisory Committee to the President’s Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection; and the National Commission to Support Law Enforcement.
